In Uganda, 78% of the population is under the age of 30 making the country one of the youngest in the world. In addition, the unemployment rate in Uganda is 83% with the youth making up 64% of this category.
According to the 2016/17 Uganda National Household Survey, 50.9% of labour in Uganda was unskilled with the majority 54.5% being women. In a bid to promote sustainable development in the country, there is a need to create decent and good quality jobs. Due to the increased demand for the creative arts industry, there is a need to skill people in producing good quality content. Also with the high level of phone usage, radio and TV penetration, the creative arts industry has the potential to be a leading employer for the unemployed youths.
MoTIV Media partnered with Swangz Avenue to have a project-based-learning program in training youth to set up an audio sound studio.
Classes were held every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 9am – 1pm (4 hours), except on public holidays when they were re-scheduled to either Thursday or Friday. The training content included analyzing a studio space, choosing building materials, setting up frames, boarding, electrical wiring and installation; fixing sound proof materials, fixing doors and windows, AC installation, acoustic treatment, equipment installation, using audio production software and using a podcast studio. The trainees also had a session in which they discussed how to make money out of their newly acquired skills.
All trainees attended at least 85% (10 classes) of the training and therefore qualified to be certified as audio studio set-up technicians. On 10/06/2021, all trainees were awarded with certificates of completion.
